Kathleen McCann

BA, MA

Speaker at Levellers Day 2003 on the theme of Education for Diversity.

I have worked in the trade union movement since 1988 and since 1992 I have been the Regional Education Officer for UNISON, the public services trade union, in their Southern Region (covering Oxon, Bucks, Hants, Berks and the Isle of Wight).

I am responsible for both trade union education and lifelong learning in the region. Since 1994 I have worked closely with the WEA, employers, government departments and other agencies and providers on groundbreaking projects to develop the workplace as a site of learning, particularly for low-paid and unqualified workers.

My approach to lifelong learning has been primarily one of social justice and equality, and the growth and development of people and communities. Also, I believe that learning should be a joyous and liberating experience! As approximately 3 out of 4 UNISON's members are female, I have a particular interest in women's education and training.
